2008 Landscaping

June 2008

Construction began on a new patio, pond and some major backyard landscaping. The following are photos taken through the months and the progress made.

First, our old worn and pitted, cracked patio was torn out and the new was created allowing for proper water drainage.

The above hole is for the
pond filtration system.

The original posts supporting the patio roof were cut 18” off the bottom and a brick foundation was made for each. This got the wood posts off the ground so they were not sitting in water and rotting when the patio was washed off or hit by sprinklers.

While the new patio was under construction, a new pond and river were being created. The pond measures 12’  across and 22” deep and is located close to the patio. The river will flow down the hill in the yard from the pond but will be an entirely different water feature.

July 2008

Using garden blocks, tree rings were built around fruit trees. Also, railroad ties were used to build garden boxes for vegetables. Both are on automatic sprinklers.

A planter was built above the pond so the fish would be able to hide under for protection and shade from the summer heat. It turned out that the planter was not sealed from the pond water and the dirt became too wet for regular plants to grow in. Therefore, we later decided to take all the plants and dirt out and make it into a water garden.

Using leftover used bricks and an old fashion hand pump, another water feature was created in the back of the yard, nested among some of the fruit trees to eventually become an old fashion well.

The pond is to the right near the patio with the river flowing down from it. At the bottom of the river is a pump house made of used brick. This holds the electrical outlets for the two pumps that re-circulate the river water. The new planter at the end of the river, located on the far left, will be for the new miniature rose garden.

The goldfish were moved over to their new larger pond and some more were added giving them lots of company.

With the goldfish relocated in their new pond, the old little pond was removed from the back of the house and the patio was extended another 20 feet to go the full length of the house and garage.

The old lattice covering over the grass and old pond was full of dry rot and termites were starting to move in. It was torn down and a new solid patio cover was built to match the existing cover.

August 2008

Russell built a garden retaining wall with steps along side the river to give the platform seating area more stability.

Panning the yard, the magnolia trees have their tree rings, an old fashion lamp post has been added and the roof has been built over the pump house.

The miniature roses have been transplanted to their new garden area and three new fruit trees and two shade trees have been added to the yard.

The old basket ball hoop and backboard have been taken down and flood lights added to the top of the poll with a flower planter box built at its base. Flood lights have also been added by the dog run and the top of the shed.

The yard is not finished. There are still 13 more tree rings to be built, the patio ceiling to be enclosed before the house can be repainted in November and some work on the pond to be completed.

Re-landscaping the backyard has been a fun adventure for both myself and my family. We look forward to having the project completed.
